Last summerGodfreys finished a busy week in July supporting the large collection of John Deere mowing and maintenance equipment at Royal St Georges during the 140th Open Championship. In addition to the large fleet already leased by the club and supplied by Godfreys over the past few years, an additional four specialist fairway mowers were supplied so that the club could mow the fairways in one direction as quickly as possible. This was requested by The R&A and ensured that the fairways were immaculate. In addition to the fairway mowers, an additional six hand mowers for the greens were supplied and also an additional tees mower. The greens were in perfect condition and STRI who are the agronomists to The R&A could not praise them enough. This was also the case with the players with the champion Darren Clarke publicly praising the course in his acceptance speech. Graham Royden, Course Manager, and his team have prepared for the Open for the past few years with a lot of work been done on the greens and fairways. A few holes were lengthened, however with the severe weather conditions over the weekend some tees were brought forward.Godfreys and John Deere supplied 4 technical support staff for the week that were responsible for setting up these precise mowing machines and ensuring that they were in perfect order. Greenkeepers and support staff rose every morning at 3.30am with the greens staff out by four mowing. It took just 2 and half hours to cut all 18 fairways and greens thanks to the increased number of greenkeepers drafted in from other clubs operating the enlarged fleet of mowers. The whole team did a great job and Graham Roydon together with the club must feel very proud of their achievement.
Congratulations to Darren Clarke, Open Champion 2011, a worthy winner.
