Buying for the Professional vs. The Homeowner
Choosing Your Power Source
Petrol Performance: Ideal for forestry, farm work, and heavy firewood processing. Our range of Stihl and Husqvarna petrol saws provides the raw power and torque needed for all-day felling.
Cordless Convenience: The modern standard for domestic gardens and noise-sensitive areas. With the Stihl AP System, professional arborists are now switching to battery for its instant start, zero emissions, and significantly lower vibration levels.
Electric Simplicity: Perfect for the occasional user who stays near a power source. Great for light DIY and log sawing near the house.
Chainsaw Buying & Maintenance FAQ
Q: What size chainsaw do I need for cutting firewood?
For most domestic firewood tasks (logs up to 10-12 inches), a lightweight petrol or cordless saw with a 12″ to 14″ guide bar is ideal. The petrol Stihl MS162 and Echo CS310 or cordless Stihl MSA80 are our most popular recommendations for Sevenoaks homeowners due to their ease of use and reliability.
Q: Are battery-powered chainsaws as good as petrol ones?
Modern cordless technology has bridged the gap significantly. While professional foresters still rely on petrol for all-day heavy felling, the new Husqvarna and Stihl battery ranges are perfect for garden maintenance and noise-sensitive areas. They offer instant starting, zero exhaust fumes, and significantly lower noise levels.
Q: Do I need a license to buy a chainsaw?
No, you do not need a license to purchase a standard chainsaw for use on your own private property. However, we strongly recommend a safety handover which we provide with every sale. To buy a top-handle saw, you will need proof of competance (qualification/certificate) as they are professional-grade tools for tree work.
Q: How often should I sharpen my chainsaw chain?
A sharp chain should pull itself into the wood. If you find yourself having to “push” the saw or if it’s producing fine sawdust rather than wood chips, it is blunt. For heavy users, this could be every few hours. We offer a professional chain sharpening service at our Sevenoaks workshop for a factory-perfect edge.
Q: What fuel should I use in my petrol chainsaw?
Most chainsaws have 2-stroke engines and so require a 2-stoke to be added to the fuel, For the best performance and engine longevity, we highly recommend using a premixed alkylate fuels such as Aspen 2. Unlike standard pump petrol (which contains ethanol and can degrade rubber seals/clog carburettors over time), alkylate fuel stays fresh for years and burns much cleaner.
Q: Does my chainsaw need a "Winter Service"?
Yes. If you are storing your saw over the winter, the fuel system is at risk. Our winter service includes draining the fuel system, checking the spark plug, cleaning the air filter, deburring the guide bar, and checking all safety components like the chain brake. This ensures that when the first storm hits, your saw starts on the first pull.
